It is probably evident by now, but during all my travels I try to taste as much local beer as possible π
Brew pubs and growler stores are popular in Atlanta especially for those seeking to taste fresh craft beer. Growler stores such as The Beer Growler are spreading since growlers currently cannot be bought from breweries.
For those that have followed my 14er adventures, you have seen the tradition of a nice cold brewski after a hike. There really is nothing better π While in Atlanta, we hiked Kennesaw Mountain (well, not exactly the mountain; long story) and Stone Mountain.
Brick Store Pub
After hiking Stone Mountain my Uncle and I went to the Brick Store Pub in Decatur. The atmosphere was great. The inside was all brick and had a old-style feel. The first beer up was the Jailhouse Mugshot IPA from Hampton, GA. This was a maltier IPA which definitely softened the bitter taste.
To go with our beers we enjoyed a Pickle Jar. This was the most unique item on the menu and it sounded intriguing. The pickle jar contains pickled vegetables/fruit and they switch them out to whatever is in season. It was so delicious. Even the pickled strawberry was tasty π
I was also a huge fan of the mustard. I could have just eaten it plain. It was a made-from-scratch stone ground mustard that had a little spicy kick π
Next, my Uncle tried the Terrapin Tree Hugger Altbier from Athens, GA. This was a great beer. I have not had many altbiers (German-style) but this one definitely set the standard high. It was very smooth, a little creamy, and light in body. This is a beer I would love to get in CO!
This last beer was not a local beer but since Colorado also doesn’t get a lot of midwest beers, I felt it appropriate. This beer was the White Hatter by New Holland Brewing (Michigan). It was a Belgian-style White Pale Ale so I couldn’t resist its rarity π
The Porter Beer Bar
Though we didn’t hike on my last day we still thought it best to spend my last couple hours in Atlanta at a brew pub. The Porter Beer Bar is located in Little Five Points. It had a similar style as the brick store with brick walls on the interior and an old-style sense as well. They had a lot of beers on tap with some unique ones like De Dochter Embrasse from Belgium.
The De Dochter Embrasse was a very impressive beer. This beer is a rare treat and is extremely unique. The beer has peat, smoke, leather, dark chocolate and plum flavor. It is an odd list of items but the beer was amazing. It was smoky for sure but not too overpowering or heavy.
Feeling some hunger coming on, I went with a nice Reuben sandwich. It had been a while since I had one and this one was nothing short of amazing π They also came with Belgian herb and garlic fries. YUM!
There was a little bit of cheating since not all these beers are available in Colorado. Bell’s Brewery (Michigan) Two Hearted Ale is one of my favorites and so I had to order it π
Of course the last beer to order was one from Georgia: Burnt Hickory Brewery. I believe it was the Tripel that I tried but I honestly can’t remember the name of it! It was similar to a Belgian-style Tripel but it had a little more sweetness to it.
Overall, there were many tasty Georgia brews π

The pickle jar was so great…I mean I love pickles but all the other veggies/fruit pickled was fun to try too π Thanks Renee!
num π love the range that you enjoy. Do you have an all-time favorite?
In response to an earlier Q, we moved from Denver to St. Paul when I was 5. Love how the snow falls and melts within the day in your parts π
Of the ones from GA, I really love the 420 by Sweetwater and the Tree Hugger by Terrapin. Both fabulously different brews! π
Yes, our “winter” weather is pretty amazing π We had a great sunny weekend but today was rainy…and possibly snow? he he you never know in CO.
Very nice write up Lilly Sue. We are fans of all these places, and the Brick store is a mile from our house so we’re regulars there. Are you a Georgia grad?
oh ha ha that is awesome! We were so close then! π No, I am not a Georgia grad…I was born in Macon and I have family in Atlanta.
Seems like such a homey delicious pub π
Cheers

It seems to balance π A little exercise and then a beer for a reward!
I’m thinking you would love this place in DC: http://www.churchkeydc.com/
