Bomber Friday: Chocolate, Peanut Butter, and Banana Ale

It’s Friday, so grab your favorite six-pack on the way home from work or enjoy a new beer. Bombers are 22 fl oz bottles of beer that often contain a brewery’s elite or unique concoction. Like a good bottle of wine, they are great for sharing and sipping :) Stay tuned for periodic blasts of bomber Fridays.

If the name did not intrigue you, the pink bottle definitely should :) Rogue has been collaborating with Voodoo Doughnut, a Portland Doughnut shop, to make some funky ales. Probably evident by the name, Voodoo Doughnut makes all kinds of fun and crazy treats from doughnuts with cereal like fruit loops and captain crunch to the Arnold Palmer with vanilla frosting and lemonade/ice tea dusting. The Memphis Mafia, which is fried with banana chunks and cinnamon and then covered with a chocolate and peanut butter glaze, is the counterpart to this crazy ale.

The Chocolate, Peanut Butter, and Banana Ale by Rogue is made with lots of ingredients including actual chocolate, peanut butter and banana. This ale had a much lighter body than I expected. It was not heavy or even too rich. There were definite notes of chocolate and banana but I had a harder time tasting the peanut butter. This is something to enjoy on a special occasion :) It is a pricier bomber but I could not resist the bright pink bottle.

Before you stop reading because you have died and gone to heaven due to a cyber sugar overload, this ale made some fabulous pancakes :D I had wanted to do this with the previous Maple Bacon Voodoo Doughnut Ale but it got off the shelf before I could. These are not beers I could drink just any time but they are fun to try. The beer replaced the milk in this pancake recipe. I am still working on a beer syrup. I have made a couple attempts but nothing has been a winner yet. This beer syrup tasted very yummy soaked into the pancakes but when tasted alone it seems too strong. Regardless, the pancakes with the beer were a treat and I topped them with some brownie crumbles…OK, now you are thinking I am sounding a little crazy like that doughnut shop :P

  1. I dunno, Lilly Sue. I read a review not long ago about their Maple Bacon Ale and both may be just a bit too far outside the park for my tastes. Still, I do like the packaging and would probably buy a couple just to have the bottles.

    • ha ha I totally understand. They are a little far out from actually being beer but welcome to american brewing. It is all about crazy experimentation with beer which isn’t for everyone. This is not a beer to casually drink; It is just a fun creation to try. I saw this local brewery is making a Cucumber Cream Ale. Intriguing!

      • That sounds horrible! lol I didn’t hear it tasted that bad but i just heard it tasted pretty sweet. Thanks for stopping by and commenting! Your “Thirsty Thursdays” inspired me to start the “Bomber Friday.” Not as clever as yours but couldn’t think of anything better! :)

The pancakes were pretty awesome if I may say so myself but for an expensive bottle it is kind of hard to justify. I didn’t use the whole bottle though so I could have figured out something else to bake with it too and then it may have been worth it.

  2. I have never seen such a brew before and i doubt i can find it anywhere here. This is so interesting. I would really love to try it! Great discovery for me. Thank you for sharing Lilly.

  3. An interesting brew for sure! I tried the bacon doughnut they made last year. I prefer my bacon beer as a Rauchbier though.

    • I wanted to try the maple bacon doughnut beer! I bet it would be super tasty as a Rauchbier…suggestion?

This beer I would not drink regularly but I thought it made some damn good pancakes :)

      • The maple bacon tasted odd to me, It had a certain feel of oiliness and herbs that I was not a fan of. Suggestions…for Rauchbier? U can’t go wrong with the Bamberg originals, Schlenkerla Marzen is my fav. I haven’t had a chance to try much of the smoke beers out there.
Pancakes: I bet it sounded like it would be a good that way. The doughie nature of the malt probably works well in flavoring actual dough.

  4. The packaging is definitely striking. Too bad about the banana, otherwise this sounded like the kind of thing I could get Mrs P to drink. Not that I’d be able to get my hands on it in NZ, but a guy can dream.

  5. Pancakes with brownies crumbled on top and a beer syrup in the works? You are indeed awesome. You kept me hanging awhile on the choc-pb-banana flavored beer–I’ve been wondering ;-) Love your tales.

Please tell me you saw my beer ice cream post as you were top on my mind when I put it together :-) I bet the rogue beers would go well with or in ice cream.

    • ha ha Thanks Liz! No, I did not see it yet…haven’t made my rounds of blog stalking ;) Sounds awesome! I am planning to make some beer ice cream with this Mexican Chocolate Stout…will take a look at your recipe! So many beers go well with ice cream :)

  6. Lover of Rogue – Great Post – thanks for sharing:) I am so excited to be going to the Brew Fest in Portland in July – cannot wait. Happy Friday – Happy Weekend – Cheers!!!

    • Thanks Renee! That sounds awesome! I have not been to Oregon yet but plan to make a brewery tour road trip soon! Have fun at the Brew Fest and please do tell me of any amazing brews you try :)

  7. Yes, I would be quite happy to pick up a 6-pack on the way home!! :-) This brew looks amazing – not only because of the pink bottle … but the flavor combination! zomg!

    • What 6-pack did you end up getting?! The pink bottle is super rad and the people behind Rogue and the doughnut shop sound like a lot of fun to make such crazy combinations :)

      • So I went and picked up dinner first, which I knew I should’ve done second so I could spend time picking out what I wanted w/o being concerned that food would get cold … haha. And then the store didn’t end up having what I really wanted (Alaskan oatmeal stout) so I stared in a haze at the selections and couldn’t decide! It was so bad! I ended up with a couple singles – Kona coconut brown and Pyramid hefe. Went with the Pyramid last night since I knew exactly what I was getting and that I’d like it. :)

      • Nice! I understand. If I am not going to the liquor store for a specific thing I struggle getting out quickly! Kona has some good beers…I think I have tried the coconut brown but not in a while. Tell me if you like it! I bet it would be tasty with a coconut cake :)

      • Ooh, yes! :) I’ll have to try a coconut cake. On my list!

I did find the Alaskan stout today (at my third store of the weekend, and second Kroger … ha) – so I got my six pack, at long last.
