Cinco De Mayo Beer Cocktail: Michelada

Twisted Pine Brewing in Boulder has been super generous and helpful with my blog. I received a lot of Billy’s Chilies to experiment with and have crafted up some tasty recipes and drinks like the Tomato Chicken Chili Beer Soup, a Bloody Billy, Coconut Chili Beer Curry (has not been posted yet), and now Micheladas for this festive weekend.

Justin Tilotta from Twisted Pine gave me the idea of making a Michelada, a Mexican-style beer cocktail, with Billy’s Chilies. This cocktail is made with beer, lime, salt, and other sauces and seasonings so the Billy’s Chilies fits nicely, replacing the beer and making it unnecessary to add much spice.

1.

Squeeze juice of half of a lime and set aside. Rim an icy cold glass with the leftover lime. Then roll the rim of the glass in a mixture of coarse salt and chili powder. .

2.

Add ice to glass (if desired). It seems Micheladas are typically served with ice but I find it a little odd putting ice in my beer! πŸ™‚ I think a cold glass suffices. Add the squeezed lime juice (add more lime later if desired).

3.

Pour the Billy’s Chilies into the glass (split between two small glasses or go big with a pint glass πŸ™‚ ). If using something other than Billy’s Chilies (Corona or go dark with Negra Modelo) then also add 1 t of your favorite hot sauce.

Micheladas with Billy’s Chilies

1/2 lime (more if desired)
coarse salt and chili powder (to rim glass)
12 oz beer (Billy’s Chilies)
Tabasco sauce, roughly 1 t or to taste (if not using Billy’s Chilies)
black pepper
Carrot as stir stick

Michelada recipes add a variety of things like Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, and tomato juice. I feel that is getting more into Bloody Mary territory and I wanted to keep this simple. This is a refreshing drink for sitting out on the porch on a nice hot day…remember it is 5 O’Clock somewhere πŸ˜‰

A little more:

For serving a crowd, make this up in a pitcher and then pour into salt/chili powder rimmed glasses. Impress guests with the carrot fashioned into a stir stick πŸ˜€

Have a great weekend with all the festivities for the Kentucky Derby and Cinco De Mayo…I will be at the South Denver Beer Festival. Stop by the Wild Woods booth if you are going!
