Bomber Friday: Funkwerks Saison

It’s Friday, so grab your favorite six-pack on the way home from work or enjoy a new beer. Bombers are 22 fl oz bottles of beer that often contain a brewery’s elite or unique concoction. Like a good bottle of wine, they are great for sharing and sipping ๐Ÿ™‚ Stay tuned for periodic blasts of bomber Fridays.

The Saison by Funkwerks is a delicious beer…end of story ๐Ÿ˜€ OK, a little more- it is very smooth, has a spiciness to it, and finishes dry. There were definite notes of orange and pepper. Since this was enjoyed with Pesto Alfredo Pasta (recipe below) the pepper mainly brought the pairing together. Read the Funkwerks description to get a better idea of all the flavors encompassed in this beer.

Funkwerks description: This tawny, orange-hued beer pours with a rocky white head. Aromas are of passion fruit, tangerine, and black pepper. Flavors cascade of orange, lemon verbena, ginger and pepper before finishing with a dry, lingering bitterness that awaits another sip. Serve at 50 degrees in a tulip glass.

Pairs well with: soft, creamy ripened cows milk cheese (suggested by Funkwerks)- I paired it with a basil/spinach pesto Alfredo pasta.

Quick recipe: For the pesto I blended- 2 cloves garlic, basil, handful spinach, 1/4 c olive oil, 3 T almonds. Add pesto to 1 c heavy cream on the stove- add 1/2 c Parmesan and pepper and salt to taste (these are all estimated measurements)

  1. Funkwerks is a great name, and the pasta and Saison sound like a great way to spend a Friday, I really like the hue and head on the beer in your glass in the background.

  2. The pasta sounds great. Can’t wait until I get a small blender suitable for making houmous, pesto and stuff.

    • Ya, it is definitely a necessity! ๐Ÿ™‚ Pesto can be a little harder sometimes in the blender- would rather a Cuisinart but they are expensive!

  3. I am so jealous you went to an Imagine Dragons concert! I love them! That is so cool that you got to go! ๐Ÿ™‚

  4. What a lovely post with a intro to new beer, delicious pasta and great music. I’ve always made my pesto using just basil and pine nuts. Would love to try adding spinach and replace pine nuts with almonds. Do they taste quite different?

    • Ya, I have just seen other people do it. I guess it is just less strong with the spinach instead of only basil but I think it is very tasty. The almond substitution probably doesn’t make a huge taste difference- but I haven’t done a taste test of them together! ๐Ÿ™‚

  5. I don’t drink beer but I don’t miss your beer-posts as I love reading your thoughts ๐Ÿ™‚ And I love your photos. Hugs.
