The Wazee Supper Club

The first experience with the Wazee Supper Club has stuck with me for well, I guess 10+ years or so since I am still remembering it. Long before I was a Denverite, it was a very unfamiliar city, though only 30 minutes from where I grew up. My family only visited it on random occasions and my friends and I only visited once we were 16 and felt clubbing was the next best thing (wrong!). Anyway, we were in Denver for some event, unmemorable to me at the moment, and after, we went on a quest for THE Wazee Supper Club. I remember my mother dragging us all the way down 16th street mall with my nephew and niece (whom were all probably under 8) and though I do not know the exact reason for this chosen place, knowing my mom, I can bet a coupon had to do with it πŸ™‚ I remember finally seeing white lettering with an extra large ‘Z’, spelling ‘Wazee’, in the distance atop a historic looking brick building on the corner of Wazee (duh) and 15th. A feeling of immediate joy and relief overcame me- did I mention we were all starving? Though I cannot remember what we ate or the exact table we sat at, I remember this first experience as a happy one πŸ™‚

Though I have been maybe one time since then I have never fully indulged in what Wazee has to offer. They have been a landmark restaurant in Denver’s historic Lower Downtown district since 1974. Black and white tiles cover the floor, giving it that diner feel. Large windows along the 15th street side pull in lots of natural sunlight and make a great spot to sit on a summer Sunday evening.

I had been pre-tempted by the fried macaroni and cheese balls and the grilled polenta were said to be a popular item. Since we did not want to get overly stuffed (we still ended up being!), they brought out just a little sampler of both. The macaroni and cheese balls came out with some homemade marinara sauce and ranch. These were as to be expected but very awesome since I love fried macaroni and cheese! πŸ™‚ The grilled polenta was so beautifully presented. The polenta itself was not very flavorful but the sundried tomato pesto it came with was very tasty. I felt the polenta should have been a little more flavorful though and maybe even served in a smaller wedge size.

Next, the Summer Wazee Salad was suggested to us. It had red sorrel, golden raisins, pickled fennel, watermelon, toasted almonds, grana padano, and creamy herb dressing. This salad was amazing! It was probably one of the best salads I have had out at a restaurant in a while. It was very much a summer salad with yummy fresh ingredients. We enjoyed it with their seasonal Watermelon Margarita– it was very refreshing!

Pizza decisions were next and we were not very good at them. We got two “small” pizzas with one being the Prosciutto Rucola and the other one being half Cheesesteak and half Mile High. Yes, we had to try three different kinds πŸ™‚

The Prosciutto Rucola had pesto, onion, roasted red peppers, 18 month old prosciutto, arugula, and honey-cider dressing. This was the most “normal” pizza we ordered and it was really good. The Cheesesteak pizza had beef, peppers, onions, mushrooms, and cheese-wiz. This is not something I would normally order nor would I probably order it again but I had to try it for its uniqueness and it was actually pretty good. The only reasons I would not order it again is because it was on the heavier side and the fact that it had cheese-wiz πŸ˜›

Some of you have probably already spotted the pizza with pickles on it; that is the Mile High with pickles, bacon, peanut butter and bravery! Yes, peanut butter and pickles! Lilly Sue could not back down on something as whacky as this and something that listed bravery as an ingredient! Many of you are mostly disgusted right now but I bet I peaked some of your interests πŸ˜€ There is lots of creamy peanut butter making it a rich pizza but it really does go with the bacon and pickles. I also added red pepper flakes and that just rounded it all together!

Pizza just tastes better with beer and fortunately, Wazee Supper Club has lots of craft beer on tap! We did a flight of beers since I could not decide on any one beer. They had a lot of specialty beers that I had not tried. We tried Lagunitas Fusion 22, Telluride Russell Kelly, The Bruery Mischief, Elevation Third Base, and Oskar Blues Old Chub on nitro. The Russell Kelly was AMAZING!! I loved this citrus-y beer with lots of grapefruit flavor! πŸ˜€ The Old Chub on nitro was so delicious as a dessert beer. It was so creamy!

It was a very casual Sunday evening. The staff were very friendly. Rita was constantly giving us good suggestions on food and telling us the history of Wazee. They have just started doing brunch on Sundays from 11-4. Some of the brunch items sound very tasty like the Benedict Di Parama which has 18 month prosciutto, pesto, and tomato hollandaise on homemade ciabatta. They also, of course, serve a breakfast pizza called Sunrise Pizza with scrambled eggs, sausage, tomato, potatoes, and, green chili! Though I did not get to take my mom on this outing, we had a laugh about our first experience when I told her I was heading in to review them. We also discussed future plans to go together again!

Disclosure: I was invited into this restaurant and this meal was complimentary. All opinions are my own.

  1. Love the Beer Tasting Pic πŸ™‚ Pickles on a pizza – never had that, but love pickles. Plus I love olives on pizza and cannot be that much of a difference. Thanks for sharing – Happy Tuesday!

    • ha ha, thanks for your open-mindedness! I have had PB and bacon and blue cheese on a burger and that is absolutely amazing. This is a similar idea but maybe not as amazing because I think the greasy burger helps a lot with the combination of flavors. It is still very fun to try and tasty!

  2. Mmm the food and drink looks really good. Pickles on pizza for me is a stretch but I have an open mind.

  3. Yum! That all looks delicious! πŸ™‚

  4. this is jaw-dropping! The drinks and food look amazing. Not so much what I think of when I hear “supper club.” Love that it all brings back memories for you. And I know first-hand that pickles aren’t so bad on pizza πŸ™‚
