Family Tradition

Homemade tortillas are a long tradition in my family. My mom has been making these tortillas for 30+ years.

Before I was born, my mom got this recipe from another family member while visiting them. I guess it is beneficial to visit relatives! 🙂

Tortilla Recipe
Feeds 6-8 people

5 c. unbleached all-purpose flour
1 T baking powder
1 stick (1/2 c.) butter
1 heaping t. salt

Instructions:

Blend all ingredients. Then add 1 1/2 c. hot water (this does not need to be boiling water, just hot from the tap). The best way to mix is with your hands! 🙂 Dough should feel soft and smooth but not sticky. Add small amounts of water until the right texture is obtained.

Knead well and let set for a few hours or overnight in plastic bag (oil coated).

A cast iron pan is a necessity…I tried doing it without and they did not turn out as well 🙁 Make sure the tortillas are fairly thin but not so thin that holes are created.

There is nothing better than a fresh tortilla off the griddle 😀

A little note: If you’re a perfectionist you will be rolling forever to obtain the perfect circle…these tortillas are special in that they came in all shapes and sizes 😀

Guten Appetit!

Leftovers

If your family is like mine you might not have any leftovers, at least when it comes to homemade tortillas. These tortillas will last a couple days but need to be eaten fairly quickly.

They can be thrown in the freezer for a later time or I love making chips 🙂

This is one of my favorite snacks/treats.

Put oil in a pan and turn on the heat. Cut the tortillas into triangles while you wait for the oil to get hot (this is key to making crisp chips!).

Also, make sure not to leave the room…the frying process is quick!

Enjoy with some tasty guacamole or salsa 🙂
